He remembered the hunters, being shot, and how the strength had been zapped from him. He'd woken up here and he didn't really know where here was. From the looks of it, it looked like the base they had trained at when he was a kid. He moved across the familiar base and toward the exercise fields.

He didn't find what he expected. Rather than finding trainees doing daily exercise he found a group of Spartans playing catch. He moved toward them and frowned as he realized who they were. The Spartan closest to him was Joshua and the one to his right was Grace. Both of them had died before he'd even reached Onyx.

"So, we're dead?" The other Spartans stopped and turned to Will when he spoke.

"Not so happy to see you here, Will." Joshua moved over. "You need a glove?" He tossed a baseball glove over to Will who caught it. Joshua grinned at him. "You'll get used to it."

"I don't think I understand." Will slipped the glove on and looked around. "Is this what the afterlife, cause it looks a lot like bootcamp."

"Well as far as we can tell this is the afterlife. I think we came to the agreement that it's likely that we all liked bootcamp, cause it's where we all met, so the afterlife is just a place you like. We liked it here so here we are in boot again." Grace tossed the ball and Malcolm caught it before throwing it to Will.

Will caught the ball and frowned. "But why are we all here? I mean, if this is supposed to be our personal favorite place then why is it the same for everyone." He tossed the ball to Sheila.

She caught it with ease. "Well that's rather simple really; at least we think it is." Sheila tossed the ball to Joshua. "We all want to be in the same place, so if we all agree that this is our favorite place then it stands to reason that we can all have the same afterlife, same place, and be together again." She smiled at him.

"I guess that makes sense." Will watched as the ball passed to Li. "So then, is John here?"

Grace shook her head. "Nope, but we aren't really sure. The most of us expect that he might have a different version of his afterlife that he might be in."

"I still think he would join us." Sam moved toward the group, frowning at Will. "So, one more bites the dust." He moved over to Will's side and looked around. "You the only one that is joining us?"

Will nodded. "There were four others of us there. Fred, Kelly, Kurt, and Linda, but…there was something different about Kurt, so I don't know if he would still think this is what he'd want in the afterlife. I think the others would join us." Will caught the ball as it was tossed to him. He then threw it to Anton. "There were some other Spartans there, not like us. Spartan IIIs from what the Dr. said."

"More Spartans?" Sam was surprised by the news. "They any good?"

Will didn't answer right away. "Sort of. I mean, they could be great, but they don't have the same sort of armor or training as us. They were green, and as Kelly said they were a bit twitchy." Will glanced up toward the sky. "So then, does that mean that only Fred, Kelly, Linda, and John are alive?"

The other Spartans were silent for a moment. "Well we don't know about Gray and Black team." Grace spoke up. "We really just aren't sure if they are alive. I mean, they might be alive, or they might just not be in the same afterlife. Really it's hard to tell. Both of their groups were wanderers so maybe they found somewhere they liked more."

Will nodded. "So this is what you guys do? You stand around and play catch?"
"Right now. We can do anything we want to." Joshua grinned at him. "Eventually you'll get used to it. It's really very freeing. No battles, no training, and you don't have to exercise to keep up your strength."

"That sounds boring." Will shrugged. "But I guess I'll have to get used to it." The other Spartans smiled and continued on with their game.
A short piece done for a contest being done by :iconnemonus: where she gave a single sentence and you have to write a story based on it. The Halo line was 'The afterlife looks a lot like boot camp. So I decided to do Will after his death and going to the afterlife and finding its basically just boot camp. I don't own anything from halo. Please read and comment.

Aw. A nice, but bittersweet little story. Interesting take on the prompt; it makes sense that the unfortunately departed SPARTANs would want to be somewhere familiar, and all together again. Though this boot camp seems a lot more peaceful than the one they grew up in. ;) Good job!
